SKF TKED 1 Non-Contact Electrical Discharge Detector Pen for Electric-Motor Bearings

Category:

Manufacturer: SKF
Exact Model: TKED 1
Product Category: Condition Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance
Product Type: Non-contact electrical-discharge detector for motor bearings

Product Overview

The SKF TKED 1 detects electrical discharges passing through electric-motor bearings. These discharges—particularly in motors controlled by variable-frequency drives—can cause electrical erosion, bearing fluting, lubricant deterioration and premature failure.

The instrument senses discharge events remotely and displays the number detected during the selected measurement period.

Marine and Offshore Applications

  • VFD-driven motor-bearing inspections
  • Main and auxiliary pump-motor checks
  • Ventilation-fan and blower motor assessment
  • Compressor and refrigeration-motor inspections
  • Cargo-, ballast- and cooling-pump motor checks
  • Detection of possible bearing-current damage
  • Investigation of recurring bearing failures
  • Predictive-maintenance screening before overhaul

Important Limitations

  • The TKED 1 detects the presence and count of discharge events; it does not directly measure shaft voltage or discharge-current magnitude.
  • Measurements should be taken near the bearing and away from power cables or the VFD controller to reduce interference.
  • The instrument is not approved for explosive atmospheres and must not be used in hazardous areas where explosion risk exists.
